Advanced Asana

Most advanced asana trainings just hand you a list of big poses and optimistically wishes you good luck.

You leave with a folder of shapes you can't yet do, cues you half remember, and no real way to tell which of your students needs which thing or how to teach it to any of them.

Then a student asks for Visvamitrasana and you're improvising. Or someone in your Tuesday class can hold a handstand at the wall but falls apart in the middle of the room and you can't explain why. Or you build a peak pose class that technically arrives at the peak pose without ever really preparing anyone for it and we wonder why people aren’t “getting it”.

The problem isn't your teaching. It's that the material was organized as a catalogue instead of a system. It’s not a you thing, and you don’t need to be able to “do” every single posture - you just need to understand how they function.

Poses are endless. Blueprints are not. A blueprint posture is foundational.

It holds the keys to a whole family of variations that share its physical requirements, and it becomes the lens you look at that family through. Visvamitrasana stops being mysterious or feeling impossible and suddenly becomes more obvious: it's Side Plank hosting a little party, with the Splits family and the Binding family both showing up.

Once you can name the blueprints inside a complex pose, you can deconstruct it. Find the ingredient asking for more time, and send your student to that practice.

HOW THE COURSE WORKS

Four stages build upon each other to make it make sense from every angle:

1. The Blueprints.

Each family studied as architecture. A written Posture Guide covering key actions, history and lore, and what to watch for as a teacher. A video Breakdown taking the pose apart piece by piece. And a Regressions and Modifications lesson on how to scale it, plus how to offer those options so they land as choices rather than consolation prizes.

2. The Practices.

Fifteen full-length classes, nearly ten hours of practice, one built around each family. These are complete creative vinyasa and hatha classes, not demonstrations of the written material. They will sequence a posture in ways the written lessons never mention, because seeing the same shape approached several different ways is how you stop believing there's one correct route in. Each one pairs with a written Reflection to bank what you noticed.

3. The Case Studies.

Thirteen complicated poses taken apart using what you now know. This is where diagnosis gets trained: name the blueprints inside a complex shape, find the limiter, know where to send the student.

4. The Transitions.

The space between the shapes, which has its own architecture and is where most teaching gets vague. You get a method for reading any transition, ten walkthroughs where Patrick or I talk through the footage in detail, and twenty-seven transitions filmed slow and silent so you can watch them as many times as you need.

A short note on what “Advanced” really means to me:

Just a tiny rant, because it’s my course and even I’m a little triggered by the term “advanced” when it comes to a Yoga practice.

The usual assumption is that advanced means nailing all the hard poses. That it means deeper backbends and spending half your practice upsidedown. and sometimes, it totally might mean that.

And other times (most of the time if I’m being real) it means having spent enough time on your mat, in the classroom, in different studios, in diverse lineages, learning from teachers who you agree with - and disagree with. It means curiosity at every turn and every transition because if you don’t have a wider world view then you can accidentally mistake personal preference, for “universal principles”.

I want to be clear that this course is unapologetically about hard shapes. It’s going to offer them to you and it will make you better at teaching them. But, the shapes are just the vehicle. What I want you to leave with is a way of looking that works on any posture, from any style, taught by anyone.

If you’ve learned with me before then you already know that many of the far end progressions of the “advanced” shapes we explore in this course can be pre-determined by anatomical bone structure or movement history…

But their base requirements?

The deconstructed puzzle pieces?

The regressions that help people finally try without the pressure to be perfect?

The progressions that make sense - even if you don’t care about ever doing the big-finale-fancy-things?

That work will always be relevant to anyone who wants to keep learning in their own version of the asana practice and thats what I hope you’ll take away from this course.
